In the early 1980s, I was a marketing manager at Zilog.
They made special chips for computers, and I was in charge of telling people about one new chip called the Z8000.

One day, our salesman in town called me and said that someone at Apple wanted more information about our new chip.
The salesman was too busy, so he asked me to go talk to the person at Apple.

I tried to explain how good our chip was and made big promises.
The engineer was very interested.
He thanked me for coming and said we were the only company to ever visit him. (He didn’t know how wrong he was!)

I forgot all about the meeting for many years.
By then, I was no longer working at Zilog. One day, I saw a picture of the Apple Mac team.
I remembered that I had met one of the team members, Burrell Smith, who was a field service representative.
I had shown him the SCC chip, which had been used in the Mac computer.
I also recalled that another person who was supposed to attend the meeting, but was too busy, was probably now enjoying retirement in Maui because of the commissions he had earned from the Mac sales.
