In the spring of 1971, I took a break from high school and worked in the computer department at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland for two months, from April to May.

I had to work on the PDP-6 and PDP-10 computers with a team of people, including Dr. Bob Sproull.

They used a special machine called a Calcomp Film Plotter. This machine drew on film using a tiny beam of electrons. This meant it could draw very detailed and clear pictures, making it good for publishing.

Bob asked me to find ways to make font sizes that can be zoomed in and out. He also wants to be able to change the shape of the font, like making it slanted or italic.

I spent about a week thinking about the problem and figured out the best way to solve it was to use a mix of straight lines and curvy lines. I also made a system to store font information. To show how it works, I did the letters “I” and “P” as examples.

This idea was very successful, and I showed a demonstration on the PDP-6’s vector display system. The display system could be changed to look like a TV screen. The characters could be made bigger or smaller, and could be slanted to look like they are written in italics. The characters could also be shown with a border around them or filled in completely.

(I also played a fun video game on the screen, “Germs” was the game I chose)

I then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for 10 years.

Let’s go back to 1989, when I was working at a technology company in Silicon Valley. They made products for Mac computers. I got an invitation to have breakfast with a man named John Warnock.

During breakfast, I told him that I created the font system using curves. He looked surprised and worried. It seemed like he and Bob Sproull were friends, and he thought I was going to complain about something.

I laughed and said to John, “Don’t worry, John. I had an idea a long time ago, but it was really Adobe and you who made it happen.” He laughed a little and seemed to calm down. But I still remember how worried he looked!
